It's still not Fall yet

Saturday we went to Kyoto to see the famous Fall colors - a trip I have been waiting patiently to go on since we arrived this summer. We've been told a lot about how amazing it is from everyone we meet - one of Japans 'claim to fame'- the Fall leaves in Kyoto and Cherry Blossom season in the spring (which I am also waiting in anticipation for).

It seems that this is an especially late coming Fall and very few of the trees have turned so far. Rex was saying he was actually worried about the timing of my trip home and that I might miss it.

I guess that's not gonna be a problem! Even so, Kyoto was outstanding and is still our favorite spot so far. It's even better in the Fall than the August heat!!! This is the time to visit - I wish you all could come over right now.

This trip to Kyoto we visited a Temple called Kiyomizu-dera. It's name means 'pure water' for the spring that runs through it.

I have been wanting to see it since I saw a picture of it's deck overlooking the entire complex and knew it would be an amazing view in the Fall. The whole temple is made without a single nail, traditional Japanese construction, and built in 798, 4 years after Kyoto was founded. It's also a World Heritage site. Definately a 'must see' for anyone visting Kyoto - according to me. It's #7 on the Top 10 list, but I'd move it way up. The walk up to the temple from the train station is through the winding streets of the Gion district which is the best representation of Old Japan that we've seen so far and where you can usually see Geisha. It's also a great place to shop for the traditional crafts and foods that Kyoto is known for.

The colors weren't perfect yet, but it was a beautiful, sunny Fall day and perfect for an excursion anyway. We'll try again sometime in the next few weeks. Last night at Helen Reed's going away party we met an English teacher who lives in Kyoto and he gave us his ph#. He said we could call for daily "Color" updates so we can time our next trip perfectly.

I can't wait!
